Welcome
Funny you should mention "be patient" as patience is the first and most important thing a newbie needs to learn

MANY THANKS to ALL for their welcoming messages and advice -  for info only I am an 'old' (in years) newbie and have learned the hard way to be patient (and also a patient).

Here is the first of many questions, as I am totally unfamiliar with model flying, be it fixed or rotary platforms I would like to first start on a simulator - Is this the normal way to start?.

I have a laptop and nothing else, and my ultimate aim is to fly Quad copters as I have read that it offers greater stability for FPV.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to which simulator (if any) I should use and what other equipment will I require?

Ok, if you are want to learn quads, you had better get started on them, I have Aerofly Pro Deluxe, but it has 1 quad which i don't think is very realistic.

Depending on how much support you need, their are different controllers.
A lot of the Arduino units have auto level, and so does the CC.

Most Sims also need a TX for operation, as many don't come with a USB one, so you may also want to pick your Freqs.

If I were starting, I would get a Turnigy 9X and a 35MHZ module or a UHF, then have 2.4 ghz video.

Just some ideas ;)

I'm no quad flyer, so I'll let others steer you in the right direction but if you've no flight experience, two things spring to mind:

1) Yes, learn first on a simulator - although it's not a requirement
2) Learn how to fly "line of sight" on a quad first before you FPV it, so you can get used to the flight characteristics.

Number two is especially important as you'll get used to the craft before you "step into it". And once you do climb aboard, it's a different learning experience anyway :)

Anyway - have fun (that's the most important thing).

I've not found any quad sims that are anything like a real quad

I'd suggest getting a 4 channel fixed pitch heli to practice with, micro for indoors to maximise your practice time

Why a Heli? Why just not build a easy to fix quad?
Just wondering ;)

Those little micro fixed pitch helis are tough as old boots they'll take a lot of hard hits before needing anything doing

They are that - the most you get is a slightly chipped blade with a big hit, excellent little things.

Larger ones aren't so good - I had a 9053 co-ax which was about 40" long. It slammed into the cooker hood in my kitchen and blades flew everywhere :D

And that was the day I was barred from flying in the house
