Local meet in Herts
« on: December 19, 2011, 11:27:16 AM »

I'm planning on flying from a 'secret location' deep inside the dreaded Luton, Stevenage, St Albans triangle morning of 31st December.

This is a private site comprising a large area (200 acres) of arable land with four trees.

Depends on the weather being reasonably clement of course.

Parking on the site is difficult (potentially messy) so we will need to be restricted to maybe five vehicles.

If there's anyone (local?) who'd like to come along please PM me for details.

Due to numbers restriction please only get in touch if you are planning to bring something to fly (LOS, FPV, UAV).

So far we'll be the gang of four from Nomansland plus one.
But with lots more toys!
Just sent PMs with location details etc.
Happy Christmas, and see you in the new year!

Guys,

I've got my FPV gear and it's nearly good to fly.
Hope to pop in on the "meet" Tom but have to be at Gatwick by 1330 so time may be limited!

Seconded. Great day out. ;D Very interesting hardware inc planes and a really unique quad and lots of ideas swapped! Thanks Charlie! I only managed to get my video recorder working at the end, but here is some footage to give a flavour...

Yeah,

Nice vid Andy. If you get some guns fitted, we'll set up some targets for you to strafe.

As I'm sure you all gathered my last flight really got me going as well!

Next purchase for me is a recorder to go on my tripod card.
I'd like to record video from the air, and sound from the ground to capture the observer/pilot comments which I thought were quite comical at times... Any recommendations for something small and simple which records onto an SD card?

Turns out my power to TX card plug was dangling: guess I'd pulled the lead when I connected a fresh battery. Glad I didn't fly again.

Thinking about prop strike on quads: I reckon a prop spinning really fast must have a high degree of inertia (or gyroscopic force?) that one wouldn't anticipate given it's lightness when static. A bit like spinning a cycle wheel whilst holding the axle. A sudden gust would then be all that's needed to cause beams to flex etc. OK, so I don't really know what I'm writing, about but maybe someone will put me straight on this.

Watch this space for news of the next SL FPV meet!

At least you found the fault.

Yeah I'm sure the props do flex a fair bit, and it was very windy. But I do love the fact that after a prop failure it was flying again shortly after.

Looking forward to the next one, I'll hopefully have something to FPV so you guys can shout UP UP UP at me too!

  hmm.. Maybe there is a way to do that electronically?.. Could be good sport!

FWIW Here is the one I got. It has some quirks but it does the job.. assuming you remember to press the buttons! Overall 5 out of 10  though.

Thanks again. Look forward to the next...

Andy,

Not electronic, but this might be the thing:

HD FPV - "Hunting Hydrogen Balloons with Fireworks"

Oh Yes ;D  that's Cool!  ... If somewhat messy!

I had more in mind something using those lazer pointer widgets. All you need for combat is one of them and a receiver ( photodiode) mounted on each plane. With FrSky (or other) telemetry you could be notified of hits on the ground.  Maybe I should try making it rather than talking about it though!

Would have to see if its possible to FPV two planes at the same time first. Not sure if the Vrx's are selective enough for that though. If not I guess you could fly one plane as a drone for target practise... or just have ground targets.

Andy

Well two of us use 2.4Ghz Video and two are on 5.8Ghz, so I guess we can get a pair of planes up together
