I took a mate of mine who is in the local BMFA affiliated club out for a bit of tri-copter/FPV experience the other weekend.  On the way to the site in the car, he started the old "a few people in the lcub have expressed some concerns about what you do" and proceeded to tell me all the reasons I should join the club.

Got him wearing goggs whilst I flew around a bit.

After 10 minutes he was all but ready to jack in his club and start doing FPV with me.  Wants me to build him a tri-copter.

No need to thank me...just spreading the message :)

Balders - nail on the head. Half of the naysayers have never tried it. They think FPV = Trappy and that is all about taking risks, and acting like a tw*t. Once you stick the goggles on them and they get to experience just flying around exploring the place they tend to see it in a different light.

And then there are some who are just happy to complain about anything, won't try FPV in case they like it, and treat it as just another excuse to spout their misery onto anyone who will listen.

+1 - same experience....
But I do notice that by not flying it there I am being asked too....
Seems to generate a level of innterest rather than negativity.

I read the rules on my local club's website.  Helis are only allowed to be flown before 10am!

Also, if you join you're not allowed to fly at any other council owned/ public land in the county.  Sod that!

And its BMFA rules only too.

The sheep, horses, ponies in the fields where I fly don't care, I tried explaining it to them but they just shrugged and walked off

As a point of interest When learning to microlight and also paramotoring we are taught about what makes a good and bad emergency landing field.

Livestock are one of the considerations which would likely also apply to fpv
You're told to stay far away from horses, as they can go into blind panic at the noise and will run headlong into barbed fences, walls, etc and can injur themselves quite badly.

Cows are also no good as they just stand still and stare, allowing you to injure yourself as well as the cow. (from experience people act a lot like cows)

Sheep are the best option as they will flock and herd themselves out of the way without losing the plot completely and wont injur themsleves trying to get out of the way.

So I never fly near horses and think the same would likely apply to rc as the model also makes a bit of noise.

Oh, not a dig at TeeJays comment by the way, just thought it worth noting to further our cause not to hack the naysayers off.

Some wise words there Glenn, I would also add that if you land in a field with cows in, you are likley to have a crumpled plane when you retrieve it.  They are just too curious! :)

You also have to factor in the pressure from the BMFA.  If they started losing members to an alternative system... well, they're gonna lose out on their salaries aren't they ;)

Why do you need a B cert, except to fly at a club... sorry, a BMFA affiliated club.

I'm preaching to the converted here, but if they embraced FPV thet could grow membership numbers and secure there salaries.

Such a shame

BMFA has around 33,000 members at any point

if you nip onto some of the UK heli forums they moan about heli support from BMFA

So I don't see FPV getting much more attention other than stick to our rules.

Clubs are Clubs

when you have 2+ people not everyone agrees and thats what you have to accept about clubs. After all were not all the same and we all have diffrent ideas how things should be....

As I said in an earlier post surprised theres no FPV Club appear yet... Only time though I expect.

I have preached on this subject many times on this forum but once more won't hurt.

I am a member of Bardney Flyers Model Club in Lincolnshire www.bardney-flyers.co.uk

The club is 99% LOS flyers on 2.4 Ghz controls. They are a little bit set in their ways but also they actively encourage me to fly FPV when I am home.
With very few exceptions all the flyers there are happy to give me a free sky for FPVing as I use 2.4 Ghz Vtx.
A lot of them have looked through the goggles and are well impressed with the concept.

In May of last year we organised the First Official FPV fly in at Bardney and we were made very welcome. The only problem was with the weather as it was blowing a gale and therefore no FPV flying got done.
I am organising another one this year for the end of April (see thread on here) and hoping for better weather this time.
As well as being a member of the club, I am also a FPVUK Member and BMFA.
The reason I still have BMFA is that I have been with them for so many years I would feel almost naked without it.
One reason I joined FPVUK was to show my support for a relatively new facet to the hobby and all the hard work that has gone into the forming of the association.
The BMFA  Achievement Scheme is not about proving anything to anybody but yourself.
I found it something to aim for and therefore my flying accuracy did get better.
How can this be a bad thing? I guarantee a lot of the guys on this forum like to think they are good flyers and I've no doubt some are but just because they can pull off a few aerobatics and land fairly close to them most of the time means nothing.
The Achievement Scheme is not just about flying ability. A large part of it is safety and no one can fault that.
Playing devils advocate here for a moment. After reading many, many FPV threads, both on here and elsewhere and seeing the blase attitude of some FPV'ers it really is not surprising that LOS flyers and clubs tend to be wary of us. We have to get rid of the "New kid on the block" attitude and then maybe we will appear more acceptable to more clubs. I certainly hope so.
