Goodbye bixler.....
« on: February 05, 2012, 06:40:34 PM »

So yesterday my OSD return to home decided it wanted to go somewhere else other than home.  After losing the RC link it kicked in, great I thought.  That was 5 mins in to the flight.  10mins later it was out of sight and 2.6km away.  The helical antenna I had built did a sterling job at that range.  Just wish the RTH worked as well as it had done the day prior when I had finished setting it up.

I've spent a good 3 hours today walking 2.8km around fields in the general location where it was last seen, farmer was great about it and I'll pop back when it's less white with snow.  I was hoping it would be in a tree out of the snow etc, but doesnt look like it.  After walking the area today, I can see why it lost the video, I must have found the only valley in Essex!

On a positive note, it appears to be decending and in a banked spiral down so I expect it should come to light when the snoew clears, but the guts of it wont be a pretty sight...

Yep - spent 3 hours walking around in the snow there, covered 2.8km  just walking.  It was last seen 123m high at that (or there abouts) location.  The previous points where the GPS showed up were along a line of drift, so I had a good scout down wind of that.  it was losing height at about 1 m/s and the drift was 4m/s or there abouts which ties in with the wind speed.

I really should have done these calcs last night / this morning before I went out!

Anyway, X marks the spot was where I looked today, given teh height and drift its very very likely it has come down in the field and not in trees.  Probably an easy find without the snow on the ground!

That's not good! If i lived closer to you would happily attempt a search and rescue mission! As everyone says though, you will have better luck once the snow has melted, lets just hope everything on/in it is reasonably waterproofed :)

Cheers for all the thoughts guys - its a waiting game now for the snow to melt away sufficiently.  I think I will take another walk on Saturday and see what it turns up.

Another 6km covered now of fields, still no sign.  Though the snow has melted a bit since Sunday, it is still getting in the way! LOL
Was a hand exercise as I was able to think a bit more about where it might be worth putting a SAR mission over to see if it is there from above.... which brings me on to my new FPV ship, I have picked up a twinstar second hand, so just need to kit it out ready to roll and then work out how I am going to get it airborne in the area :)

Hi Jason,

Sorry to hear about your plane. I hope you find it soon. Unfortunately I'm away at the moment and dont have a fpv plane ready, but I might be able to rig up my EasyStar fpv when I get back to Herts to go out looking for it next week.

regards
