2 batteries v. 1 battery
« on: February 22, 2012, 01:20:19 AM »

I have been advised by two Forum members separately that having 2 plane batteries - 1 for motor + 1 for rx, servos, osd & video is 'old fashioned'. Both of these members have passed on a lot of good advice to me and I DO trust and respect their judgements.

My question is that, as standard the Llanyu 2 metre Predator foamy I am building has its' 3s 11.1v battery located close to the nose. When I installed a basic fpv setup of pan camera & vtx, both of which are fitted in the cockpit area, the plane was 'off-the-scale' nose heavy on my c of g balancer. The addition of a 2s 'video' battery aft of the wing allowed me to balance out correctly.
I will soon be fitting osd, battery sensor & gps, which can only be located forward of the c of g.
If I was to remove the aft video battery I cannot see how I would balance the plane, without adding weight aft. (I could move the vtx aft but currently have the vtx in the cockpit, the rx central & the pusher motor a bit further aft - I think this separation is best to avoid vtx / rx / motor interference?)
Surely it's better to have aft balance weight in the form of a useful battery rather than just a collection of non-functioning fishing weights ???

Have you a picture of your plane, open with gear in to see options ?

Cant you relocate main lipo further back at all ?

I've had the same Skywalker for FPV for two years now. It's had 6 new wings, 3 new canopies and 2 new fuselages.

If its easier to balance with a second battery, why not?

Might not be as "clean" a setup but it works. I did that on my slipstream.

This thread sounds mainly commented by plane flyers. Who flying Multi copters use 1 or 2 batteries?

Multi flyer, 1 lipo, only CG issues when you plant a gopro on its nose, but nothing that cant be fixed by lipo`s position

put 2 in it if you want...

its more a question of the weight of everything you want to carry!

as a rule of thumb though, you want to get rid of any extra weight on the airframe not add it.
it would seem a shame to ruin the characteristics of the plane just so you could get it to balance!

a balanced brick is still a brick!
